About
Dr. David Johns is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) in the State of Colorado with over twenty years of experience helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and create meaningful change. He has a doctorate in Counseling Education and Supervision.
His goal is to help people build stronger, healthier relationships—with others and with themselves. He works with individuals to strengthen self-compassion, find zest and excitement in everyday life, ease emotional pain, and build resilience.
David knows that it takes courage and determination to start therapy. He honors the bravery it takes to show up, be forthright, and “do the work.” Along the way, he helps people develop practical tools for managing stress and strengthening their overall sense of well-being.
He supports clients through a wide range of challenges, including grief work, healing from trauma including religious and spiritual trauma, understanding relationship dynamics, communication struggles, anxiety, depression, spirituality, sexuality, coming out, addiction, and the overt and covert impacts of racism and homophobia.
As a therapist, David understands that no two people experience these things the same way, and he takes care to meet each person where they are. For instance, he recognizes that grief isn’t just about losing a loved one; grief can also show up during meaningful life transitions, like when a child grows up and leaves home, losing a job, or during a breakup and divorce.
David provides counseling services through teletherapy which offers more flexibility in scheduling. He uses a variety of clinical approaches tailored to each person’s needs, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Person-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Gestalt Therapy, and Gottman’s Couples Method—among others.
Outside of his work, he enjoys slowing down and staying connected to the things that bring him joy. He loves reading novels in both French and English. As a Francophile he has a deep appreciation for French culture. He also enjoys cooking elaborate meals, practicing yoga, and going for walks—simple, grounding activities that help him stay balanced and present in his own life.
